Time Horizon
Time Horizon is not knowing the deadline is Friday. It is whether Friday feels like it is approaching all week.
This dial sets whether time is lived as a continuous sequence that pulls behavior toward what comes next, or as a series of present moments where the future exists on the calendar but never feels closer until it is here.
The range
- Lower
- Future intervals feel compressed or absent, so events arrive from nowhere despite being visible for weeks, and step sequences must be built deliberately rather than arising on their own. The gift is genuine present-moment focus; the cost is that deadlines exert no felt pull until they are essentially here. At the far end this is time blindness, and it is not volitional.
- Higher
- Attention is pulled forward along imagined timelines, which makes anticipatory behavior and long-horizon planning reliable. The costs are real too: the week ahead gets lived in while today unfolds, and a carefully held timeline can turn rigid, so disruption of the plan lands as a genuine discontinuity rather than a minor change.
It depends
Approaching deadlines can switch on emergency temporal awareness, letting urgency temporarily stand in for foresight. Hyperfocus, flow, and deep present-moment engagement absorb the resources that background time tracking runs on. Under high cognitive load, the sequence collapses to just the immediate step. And felt time is usually stronger in familiar, structured domains than in novel or socially ambiguous ones. Your baseline is the architecture; today is the state.
What it is not
- Not duration accuracy
- Inner Clock is knowing how much time has passed or remains. Time Horizon is whether future events feel imminent and sequence themselves. You can track duration accurately while nothing feels approaching, or feel events coming while misjudging how long things take.
- Not Mental Simulation
- Mental Simulation supplies what the future looks like; Time Horizon supplies when it happens and in what order. High Simulation with low Horizon gives vivid scenes with no schedule; the reverse gives an approaching sequence of steps without rich scenario content.
I had no idea how quickly that would arrive.
