Branching Futures

Branching Futures is not indecision. It is how many alternative tomorrows your mind drafts at the same time.

Where one person holds a single expected path, another holds "what if A, but also B, and what if C" all at once, and each considered path can open into further branches. Elaborate strategic planning and elaborate anticipatory worry are built from the same architecture; only the content differs.

The range

Lower: One pathway at a time feels natural. The plan is the plan, which makes planning efficient and action-oriented. The cost is brittleness: alternatives are not pre-built, so when reality diverges it lands as an unexpected failure rather than an anticipated possibility.
Calibrated (middle): The sweet spot. Two to four alternatives arise naturally and can be compared without strain. The primary path is held alongside its key variations, and contingencies feel manageable rather than crowding.
Higher: Multiple futures arrive unbidden and alternatives spawn their own alternatives. The asset is genuine contingency coverage: more risk visibility, more fallback options. Past roughly five to seven live scenarios, new branches add noise rather than information, and committing gets hard because four other paths remain simultaneously viable.

It depends

Novelty and stakes: New and high-stakes situations substantially increase branching; familiar, routine contexts allow single-path processing.
Stress: Threat states specifically multiply threat-relevant branches, and sustained stress can make branching involuntary and hard to terminate.
Mental load: Branching runs on working memory, so it is among the first things to collapse under fatigue and cognitive load.

Baseline is the architecture. Today's branch count is the state.

What it is not

Not simulation depth: Predictive modeling governs how rich each individual simulation is; Branching Futures governs how many run at once. Many shallow branches and one deep simulation are opposite corners of the same grid.
Not flexibility: Cognitive flexibility is the ability to switch between established frameworks. Branching is parallel generation of future paths, not switching.

I cannot commit to one path, because four others are still open and unresolved in my head.
