Ripple Tracing is not how smart you are. It is how many causal threads your mind pulls on, unasked, whenever it makes sense of anything.

The same situation genuinely produces different models at different densities: one mind sees A causes B and moves, another sees A modifying C, interacting with D, feeding back on itself. Neither is the correct picture by default.

The range

Continuum: both ends carry real costs and real advantages. Neither is better.

Lower

Events read as largely independent, and explanation stops at the immediate cause. That buys faster, action-oriented processing with far less analytical overhead and quicker commitment. The cost is systematically missed second and third-order effects, so solutions can produce unintended consequences a denser analysis would have caught.

Higher

Interconnections proliferate without effort, and the resulting models are often more complete and more accurate. But the map can grow faster than any decision timeline, so nothing simple stays simple, commitment slows in proportion to the model, and a model that feels complete can outrun its evidence.

It depends

Fatigue, stress, and high cognitive load shrink working memory, and the model simplifies non-volitionally; links just fall out. High energy lets more links be held at once, ambiguity invites more filling-in, and expertise supplies pre-built causal structures, so density runs far higher inside domains you know and care about. Your baseline is the architecture; how dense the map runs today is the state.

What it is not

Not intelligence
Density is the spontaneous richness of causal perception, not the accuracy of the models it produces. High density can generate premature certainty, a model that feels finished before the evidence supports it, as readily as genuine systemic insight.
Not Mental Simulation
Mental Simulation governs how vividly futures are imagined; Ripple Tracing governs the structural complexity of the causal models those simulations are built from. Vivid but structurally simple futures and dense systems-level forecasts are different dial settings.
