Trait

Storm Watch

How much weight the dark forecasts carry.

  • Weight not frequency
  • Simulation-driven
  • Real radar, real static
  • Modulator

Storm Watch is not how often you imagine the future. It is how much weight the dark versions carry when you do.

The threat content is not imagined more frequently; it receives more processing weight. On a high setting, downside scenarios are more vivid, more emotionally compelling, and more persistently attended to than equally likely good outcomes.

The range

LowerHigher

Continuum: both ends carry real costs and real advantages. Neither is better.

Lower

Downsides are noted but do not dominate, futures feel weighted toward neutral or positive, and acting under genuine uncertainty is comfortable. The cost is under-preparation: genuine risk signals may not trigger the precaution they deserve, and consequential downsides can arrive unplanned-for.

Higher

Negative outcomes feel prominent and urgent even in objectively safe situations, and the most vividly developed simulations are the threat scenarios. The advantage is genuine risk identification and precautionary behavior. The cost is a systematically inflated threat map and the chronic anticipatory arousal of a near-constant sense that something could go wrong.

It depends

Arousal
Acute stress and high arousal reliably raise effective Storm Watch above baseline; the same person anticipates more risk when stressed.
Chronic stress
Sustained stress sensitizes the threat system over time, slowly shifting the baseline itself.
Familiarity
Novel, high-stakes, and socially consequential contexts amplify; familiar domains with well-established base rates quiet it.

Baseline is the architecture. A stressed week is a state, not a new setting.

What it is not

Not Threat Sensitivity
Threat Sensitivity is stimulus-driven: how readily what is in front of you reads as dangerous. Storm Watch is simulation-driven: how heavily the threat content of imagined futures is weighted. Both feed anxious forecasting, but they are distinct mechanisms.
Not Certainty Pull
Certainty Pull is the discomfort of not knowing enough yet. Storm Watch is the extra weight on bad outcomes inside the forecast. You can be threat-biased without needing immediate closure, and closure-driven without being threat-biased.

There is this near-constant sense that something could go wrong, even when nothing is.
