Mental Simulation is not worry and it is not planning. It is how richly your mind rehearses the future before it arrives.
Everyone's predictive system is always running; the dial is richness. At one end, outcomes are discovered by living them. At the other, the simulator plays detailed what-if movies in the background, whether or not you asked it to.
The range
- Lower
- Future outcomes feel vague or abstract until they occur, and anticipatory adjustment takes deliberate effort. This is not a deficit: you get fuller present-moment availability and far less forecasting load. The cost is reduced preparation for outcomes that could have been foreseen.
- Higher
- The simulator runs continuously, generating consequence chains and vivid what-ifs even when nothing requires forecasting. That is the raw material of exceptional strategic thinking. The cost is that anticipated futures can crowd out the present, and at the far end, decisions stall while the model space keeps expanding.
It depends
Novelty, uncertainty, high stakes, and interest-aligned domains all turn the simulator up; it runs far richer in territory you know well. Fatigue, depression, stress, and a fully loaded mind turn it down, and under fatigue the usual failure is not no simulation but repetitive low-quality simulation. High arousal skews its inputs toward threat. Your baseline is the architecture; today is the state it is running in.

- Planning converts simulations into structured, actionable sequences. Mental Simulation is the raw generation of what could happen that planning draws on. You can have vivid futures with no path to reach them, or well-organized action against thinly imagined futures.
- Not Time Horizon
- Mental Simulation supplies the content of the future, what it looks like. Time Horizon supplies the temporal structure, when things happen and in what order. High Simulation with low Time Horizon gives vivid future snapshots with no felt schedule.
