Effort Cost
Effort Cost is how expensive a task feels before you have even begun it.
This is the dial behind the strange gap where you genuinely want to do something and still cannot make yourself start. It is a price signal arriving loudly enough to change the math, not a verdict on how much you care.
The range
- Lower
- Effortful tasks can be started without much internal preparation. The cost is under-accounting, so you may take on too much and find the real price only after you have committed.
- Higher
- Non-activating tasks feel aversive or blocked until urgency, reward, interest, or external structure shows up. The same signal that stalls boring work also protects you from pouring effort into low-value things.
What it is not
- Not your fuel
- Effort Cost is how expensive action feels. Energy Pool is whether the fuel is actually there. They pull on each other, but one is a feeling and the other is a resource.
The task was not big. Starting it felt enormous, and I could never explain why.
