Interest-Driven Hyperfocus
If six hours can pass inside a project like six minutes, and the next morning eight minutes of paperwork is a physical impossibility, this is the configuration that explains both.
Observers watch this and conclude selective effort: clearly you can focus when you want to. They are almost right, and the error in the almost is the whole story. It is not focus when you want. It is focus when the gate opens, and the gate does not take instructions from wanting. This is a combination pattern: eight traits that none of your effort switches one at a time, flipped together by a single signal called interest.
Where it starts for you
This pattern has more than one front door. For some it is the bimodal day: six unbroken, brilliant hours in the matching work and shredded attention everywhere else, read by others as inconsistency when it is one parameter with two settings. For some it is the lock: sitting down for twenty minutes and surfacing at 1:40am, dinner uneaten, texts unread, not because the work finished but because something outside broke the seal. And for some it is the crash: three weeks of obsession, real money, real skill, then nothing at all, like someone unplugged it. The crash is the gate closing, not a loyalty failure. The fixation was not fake because it ended, and serial depth is a collection strategy, not a character flaw.
One differential matters here. If schedules and accountability genuinely open your gate, interest or no interest, this is not your pattern: your activation runs on structure, and those tools will keep working for you. This page describes the architecture where interest holds the only key, which is exactly why a borrowed calendar produces nothing but shame.

Traits in this cluster
No single trait produces hyperfocus. Interest opens one gate, and the whole configuration changes state at once. Read these as ingredients.
The gate pair: Interest Ignition and Starting Gate are not two steps but one mechanism. When interest is present, starting costs nothing. When it is absent, starting is effortful or impossible, with little in between.
The price flip: Effort Cost prices identical work as nearly free inside the gate and prohibitively expensive outside it. Both readings are accurate reports of a real internal price.
The endurance ceiling: interest raises Attention Stamina on both axes at once, distraction immunity and staying power. The moment interest drops, both fail together. The state has a cliff on each side.
The voltage and the flywheel: Inner Drive sets how much flows once the switch closes, and Momentum keeps the state spinning until something external stops it.
The gate extender: Mastery Hunger keeps the gate open for anything you are getting good at, then quietly closes it once mastery flattens the challenge signal. Fixations have a built-in arc: ignition, deepening, plateau, sudden zero.
The suppressed observer: the Inner Observer is the first thing the state consumes. That is why time, hunger, and the room vanish, and why the lock is discovered afterwards rather than steered.
These are the eight traits this combination is built from. Each is a trait in its own right with its own page. Open any card to read it.
The domains it spans
Three domains: the fuel lives in Drive and Energy, the gate and the stamina in Executive Control, and the observer that goes quiet in Self-Awareness.
