Attention Stamina

Attention Stamina is not one setting on a dial. It is two modes your system swings between: a scattered mode where focus keeps fragmenting, and a locked mode where it holds so hard that stopping becomes the difficult part.

Once attention has been allocated, stamina decides whether it stays. The same architecture produces both modes, and what moves you between them is rarely effort. It is almost always the interest and arousal in the moment.

The range

Scatter mode
Focus fragments before the work can accumulate. External signals, stray thoughts, or simply the passage of time break the task-state, so work feels like repeated restarting. The upside is genuine responsiveness to a changing environment; the cost is that sustained, cumulative effort is much harder to hold.
Lock mode
Attention holds with intensity and duration. Long work blocks, deep immersion, and flow become available. The cost is the flip side of that strength: the system can stay locked past the point it should move, missing transitions, better targets, or the fact that the environment has changed.

What flips the switch is interest. High interest floods the reward system and stabilizes focus without executive effort; the moment interest drops, both the holding and the duration fail together.

It depends

Interest
The master modulator. A task you care about can extend focus far past its usual window, while an identical task you do not care about collapses it within minutes.
Fatigue and sleep
As the arousal chemistry that sustains focus depletes, sessions shorten from within with no external trigger. Deep sleep restores it, which is why the same task holds on Monday and slips by Friday.
Sensory load
A louder environment feeds more competing signal in, so a busy room shortens effective focus without changing the underlying capacity.

Baseline is the architecture you were built with; today is the state it happens to be running in, and the two are easy to confuse.

What it is not

Not Signal Filter
Signal Filter governs how much irrelevant material gets in before you start. Attention Stamina governs how long the focus you did allocate can hold. One protects focus from noise; the other keeps it from collapsing over time.
Not Gear Shift
Attention Stamina stabilizes the current task-set. Gear Shift releases and reconfigures it when context changes. One is hold; the other is shift.

I can't hold five minutes on the thing I'm supposed to do. Then I surface and six hours have gone into the thing that caught me.
