Goal Grip
Goal Grip is not whether you care about the goal. It is whether the goal stays live in your head while you are busy doing the work it requires.
One part of the mind holds why you are doing this while another runs the current step. When the grip loosens, the steps keep executing correctly; they just stop accumulating toward where you meant to go.
The range
- Lower
- The goal signal fades between moments of explicit contact with it. An interruption or an interesting side path can drop the thread of why without dropping the thread of what, producing the familiar day of substantial work that was not the work you meant to do. The effort is real and often genuinely good; it is the tether that fails, not the person, and external anchors restore most of what the internal signal does not hold.
- Higher
- The most common shape: the overarching intention stays live across steps, interruptions, and days, and re-entry after interruption is easier because the destination is still active. The subtle cost is rigidity, a goal held so firmly that the system is slow to revise it when new information should genuinely change course.
It depends
- Interest
- The same person can lose the thread of an obligation project within twenty minutes and hold a personally significant project coherent for months. Motivation is the fuel this grip runs on; when it is absent, the goal must live externally.
- Interruptions
- They do not just break flow; they often break the live goal signal itself. Resuming activity is not the same as resuming the goal.
- Goal definition
- A vaguely specified goal gives the maintenance system nothing stable to hold. Drift is likelier when done was never named.
- Flat value
- In low mood, goals that used to sustain themselves start feeling arbitrary. The goal has not changed; the signal that kept it active has gone quiet.
Baseline is how well the grip holds under ordinary conditions; today is the grip plus interest, interruption load, and how clearly the goal was named.
What it is not
- Not planning
- Blueprinting builds the sequence of steps; Goal Grip keeps the destination live while the steps run. Without it, a sound plan keeps executing toward wherever the goal has drifted.
- Not remembering later
- Future Memory is retrieving an intention at the right future moment. Goal Grip is keeping the intention active enough, continuously, that the work stays organized around it. One is timely retrieval; the other is sustained hold.
I got a lot done, but none of it was what I needed to do.
