Starting Gate
Starting Gate is the threshold between intention and action. It opens on signal, not on sincerity.
The gate takes input from interest, urgency, novelty, and arousal, and it opens when the combined signal clears its set point. Where that set point sits is the trait. When it sits high, deciding and doing become two separate events, sometimes days apart, and no amount of meaning it closes the distance.
The range
- Lower
- Ordinary intention is enough signal, so deciding and starting are nearly the same event. The liability is over-starting: too many things begun on impulse, not all of them worth beginning.
- Higher
- Ordinary intention is not enough, so obligation tasks can sit untouched for days while the backlog quietly compounds. The same gate conserves deep effort for what genuinely activates you, and it opens instantly for interest or urgency, which means the machinery works. It just runs on a different fuel than willpower.
What it is not
- Not caring
- Caring runs on a different circuit entirely. In this architecture the care is usually intact, which is why being told to care more lands as an insult rather than help.
- Not Effort Cost
- Effort Cost is how expensive the start feels before you attempt it. Starting Gate is the mechanism that has to open regardless of the price tag. They stack on the same task, but they are separate dials.
