High-Drive Burnout
If you loved your work, never once had to fake enthusiasm, and then apparently overnight could not function, this is the pattern that explains it.
Some burnout is a long visible slide: dragging, dreading, forcing yourself through work you no longer want. This is not that. This is the burnout of the person who woke up pulled toward the work, whose output was real and often exceptional, and whose collapse seemed to come from nowhere. Everyone around them is baffled. They are baffled. Nothing precipitated it. That is the point: nothing needed to.
Where it starts for you
The useful question is not whether you work hard, it is which link gives first. For some the pool itself runs small and its warning signals arrive attenuated or late, so there is no adequate early warning before the crash point. For some the refill is the slow link, and one peak session gets mistaken for a sustainable pace, so every ordinary week runs over budget. For some the flywheel is the culprit: stopping points simply do not register as stopping points, and the sprint that was meant to take two weeks quietly becomes a marathon. If your burnout announced itself for months in rising dread and effortful mornings, that is a different pattern. This one requires the gauge to be outshouted.
The earliest signal that survives the mask is not tiredness. It is effort-cost drift: tasks that used to be light, even the loved ones, start feeling heavy. That is not falling out of love with the work. It is the fuel gauge finally getting a word in, and it is the one reading worth training yourself to notice.
I loved my job until the morning I couldn't get out of bed.
the reaction we design for
The chain
This pattern is a cascade with an order. Each link feeds the next, and the loudest signals sit at the top while the emptying happens underneath.
The engine
Inner Drive supplies genuine pull and Momentum keeps it rolling, producing extended high-output engagement that never needs faking.
The spend
Drive is an expenditure driver, not an energy source. The work feels light because drive subtracts the feeling of effort, not the effort itself.
The mask
Momentum can run past the depletion point, so the recovery debt from each stretch is larger than you recognize. The momentum masked the depletion signal.
The missed refill
Recovery periods are too short, the wrong kind, or the refill simply runs slow. Each episode ends with an unpaid invoice.
The quiet slide
Depletion accumulates invisibly over weeks to months while the day-to-day feel stays flat.
The late tell
Emotional steering degrades on the same shared pool, and previously manageable triggers start flooding. That volatility is a fuel reading, not a personality change.
The collapse
Sudden, and apparently unrelated to any specific precipitant. It is the first honest reading the system delivers.
Traits in this cluster
Two amplifiers running output against two modulators managing the fuel underneath. Each is a trait in its own right with its own page. Open any card to read it.
Notice the shape. The two loud traits are the drive pair, and their gauges stay green the whole way down. The two that would show red are exactly the ones running quiet.
The domains it spans
All four traits live in a single domain. This cascade is Drive and Energy talking to itself: the drive side of the house outshouting the fuel side.
