New learning starts out fragile and gets actively stabilized over hours, days, and sleep cycles. This dial sets how much repetition, review, and sleep it takes before something learned once is still there next week.

The range

Lower
Learning that feels solid the day it happens deteriorates faster in the days after; one clear explanation that seemed to work does not stick as expected. The understanding in the moment is real, and spaced, review-rich formats produce equivalent final learning. The cost is overhead: more exposures, more review cycles, and heavy dependence on the sleep that follows learning.
Higher
This is the common shape of the dial. New learning stabilizes with few exposures; learned once, reviewed once, reliably available weeks later, so acquisition compounds efficiently. The subtle cost: rapid consolidation can overfit to recent experience, and settling early can make it harder to update when new information arrives.

Sleep
The primary consolidation mechanism, not optional rest. Disrupted sleep after a learning day produces substantially more forgetting.
Stress
Chronic stress and its cortisol load impair the hippocampal machinery that does the stabilizing; burnout often announces itself as new things no longer sticking.
Emotional arousal at encoding
It boosts consolidation for the emotional content itself while impairing it for the neutral material around it.

What it is not

Not Mental Workspace
Working memory is how much you can hold while learning is happening. Memory Glue is how quickly that learning becomes durable after the moment ends. You can follow everything in the room and still need more repetition before it truly sticks.
Not Memory Reach
Glue is how well information gets durably stored; Reach is how readily stored information comes forward. Something can be deeply consolidated yet hard to access, or easily surfaced yet not durable.
