Future Memory

Future Memory is not whether you care about the commitment. It is whether the intention surfaces at the moment it becomes doable.

An intention has to sit dormant across hours or days and then win retrieval exactly when its trigger arrives. Holding it while you do everything else spends the same resources the current task is using, which is why this system is so sensitive to load.

The range

Lower
Intentions are formed with genuine commitment and then fail to fire when the moment arrives, often surfacing only after you have left the situation. This is retrieval failure at the trigger, not weak motivation or broken promises, and externalized triggers restore reliability directly. People who live here often build impressive external systems; the scaffolding is the achievement.
Higher
Formed intentions surface at the right time and place without reminders; walking into the room brings back why you came, and commitments made days ago fire on cue. The subtle cost is over-trust: a system this reliable rarely gets backup, so illness, unusual stress, or a disrupted context can drop a high-stakes intention with no net underneath.

It depends

Load
Monitoring for the trigger competes with whatever you are currently doing, so busy, demanding stretches degrade retrieval most.
Sleep and stress
Sleep deprivation and emotional arousal both reduce reliability; an intention formed at the end of a stressful day is less likely to survive to tomorrow's trigger.
Context shifts
Moving between environments is the highest-risk moment. The cues holding an intention active do not transfer, which is why I'll remember when I get there is so often wrong.

What it is not

Not working memory
Working memory holds information active during the current task. Future Memory keeps an intention dormant across a delay and reactivates it later. One is present-moment holding, the other future-moment firing.
Not planning
Blueprinting generates the intention and its timing; Future Memory stores it and fires it at the right moment. Both are required to close the loop, and neither substitutes for the other.
