Memory Crowding is not forgetting. It is where you parked today being drowned out by every other place you have ever parked.

When stored memories look alike, they compete for the same cue: the new password collides with the old one, Tuesday's dose blurs into Monday's, this week's meeting overwrites last week's. The memory is still there and recoverable; its lookalikes are shouting over it. That is different from a name that will not surface at a party, which is a reach problem, not a crowding problem.

The range

Cost sits at the high end. Low to moderate is the ordinary way this runs.

Lower

The norm. Similar material coexists in memory without much competition, so overlapping vocabulary, similar faces, and near-identical procedures stay manageable. It is a real advantage in precision work that lives on fine distinctions, though the same clean separation may come with less of the spontaneous associative spread that dense overlap can feed.

Higher

This is where the cost concentrates. Related items blur, block, or swap at retrieval: old learning intrudes on new, intensive new learning muddies what came before, and the similar-but-wrong item surfaces instead of the target. The errors are systematic, not random, and the same densely connected architecture may be part of what feeds rich associative thinking.

Pacing
Rapid back-to-back learning of similar material produces far more crowding than spaced learning with contrast between sessions.
Sleep
Sleep consolidation stabilizes memories before the next batch of similar material arrives; short sleep leaves them exposed.
Stress and anxiety
Chronic stress erodes the separation machinery itself, and anxiety narrows encoding so similar items get stored with less distinguishing detail.

What it is not

Not Memory Reach or Word Finding
Those are about how quickly anything comes back at all. Crowding is specifically similar memories blocking each other: the more lookalikes stored, the harder each one is to pick out.
Not forgetting
True forgetting is the loss of stored information. Crowding is retrieval failure for information that is still stored, blocked by related material and recoverable with sufficient cues or time.
Not retrieval speed
Memory Reach is how quickly stored material can be accessed. Memory Crowding is how cleanly similar material stays separated during that access. You can retrieve fast and still grab the wrong twin, or retrieve slowly for reasons that have nothing to do with interference.

It is not gone. I know it is in there. Its almost-twin just answers first.
