Self-Check is the running comparison between what you are doing and what you meant to be doing, and it works best at medium volume.
It holds what your inner observer can see against a standard: social expectations, task requirements, your own intentions. Part of it is fast and automatic, the sudden something-is-off feeling; part is deliberate tracking that spends real fuel every minute it runs.
The range
Saturation curve: the middle tends to work best; both extremes cost something.
Lower
Feedback loops are thin. Misalignments get discovered in retrospect or through other people, and friction accumulates because you do not register how you are landing in the moment. This is not indifference; the signal is simply not generating enough data. The quiet upside is that none of your fuel goes to self-surveillance.
Calibrated (middle)
The sweet spot. Genuine deviations get detected and repair is prompt, and the monitoring stays proportionate: louder in high-stakes moments, quiet when nothing needs tracking. Its one dependency is fuel, since the deliberate layer degrades under load and fatigue.
Higher
Tracking is nearly continuous, which buys precision, consistency, and real social accuracy. At saturation you are performing and critiquing the performance at once; the monitoring interferes with the very thing it monitors, and sustained self-surveillance produces exhaustion proportional to the effort.
It depends
- Stakes
- Evaluative, high-stakes, or novel contexts turn the monitor up. Trusted relationships, explicit permission to be yourself, and flow states let it fall away.
- Fuel
- The deliberate tracking layer is resource-hungry and degrades under fatigue, load, and depletion, while the fast automatic layer keeps running.
- Mood
- Low mood biases the monitor toward negative detection: it finds every failure and misses the successes. That is a skewed feed, not accurate self-knowledge. Baseline is how sensitive the monitor is built; today is how loudly circumstances are making it run.
What it is not
- Not inner awareness
- Inner Observer is the general capacity to observe your own internal states. Self-Check is one specific use of it: evaluating behavior against outside standards. The two can come apart; social monitoring can even run on learned scripts with little inner awareness behind it.
- Not task-level error catching
- Error Radar fires when task execution deviates from intent. Self-Check continuously evaluates social and contextual performance. One tracks the work; the other tracks how you are being received.
People assume it comes naturally. I am performing and grading the performance at the same time, the whole way through.
