Room Sense is not how well you read people. It is how automatically you read the room itself, the whole situation as a system.

It is an attention-allocation dial: how much processing runs on the situational background versus the task in front of you. At the high end the reading happens before conscious effort; at the low end the model updates late or only when someone flags the shift out loud.

The range

Continuum: both ends carry real costs and real advantages. Neither is better.

Lower

The situational model updates slowly or incompletely, so tonal shifts and changed expectations can go unregistered until they are explicit, and missteps feel random because the signals preceding them were never tracked. The upside is real: familiar, stable environments are navigated reliably, and attention stays free for the task instead of the atmosphere.

Higher

The room is continuously modeled in rich detail, often before you can articulate what you noticed, which produces excellent timing, calibration, and environmental intelligence. The cost is a monitoring system with no natural off switch: high-context settings are fatiguing, and the scanning can keep running even in recovery time.

It depends

Novelty
The primary amplifier. Unfamiliar environments demand model-building from scratch; familiar ones run on stored schemas at a fraction of the cost.
Fatigue
Depletion degrades both the automatic capture and the working memory that holds the model, dropping effective awareness below baseline even for high-awareness people.
Group size and complexity
More people and more concurrent dynamics mean more model to maintain; single-person, familiar settings ask the least of this system.

Baseline is how sensitive the radar is; today is what novelty, fatigue, and the size of the room are currently doing to its range.

What it is not

Not Social Radar
Social Radar is person-level: extracting cues from one individual. Room Sense is room-level: tracking the whole situation as a system. You can read a room accurately while misreading the person in front of you, or the reverse.
Not Self-Check
Self-Check asks 'how am I landing?' Room Sense supplies the environmental data that question needs. When Room Sense runs low, Self-Check works from an inaccurate map no matter how strong the drive to check is.

The room is always present in my awareness. Even when nothing is at stake, some part of me is still tracking it.
